Barbara's poetic licence goes to print

From the Guardian Series, first published Friday 6th Dec 1996.

WARRINGTON poet Dr Barbara Bentley has had her first book of poems published.

"Living Next to Leda" provides some new insights into what it is like to be a woman living in today's fraught, urban culture.

She sees it as an indirect reflection of her own life.

"There are so many pressures on women to compete in the job market and bring up children. Not that I would want it any other way" said Barbara, a mother of two.

The book has been launched with two readings, one of which was at the Manchester Poetry Festival last weekend.

Barbara, who lives in Croft, has won several national poetry competitions and had work published in magazines and anthologies.

She has recently gained an MA in creative writing at Glamorgan University.

She is now working on a second book.

Barbara is a lecturer in English at Wigan and Leigh College.
