Paul Rice, town centre manager said: "We hope that this year, with the new River of Life feature and pedestrianisation in Bridge Street, the town centre will prove even more attractive than before."
Carol singers will be in the town centre on Saturdays, Sundays and on Wednesday and Thursday nights until Christmas.
At Cockhedge, there will be children's entertainment each Saturday.
This week, Father Christmas will handing out free gifts to children under 10.
Attractions on remaining Saturdays will include puppet shows and balloons and there will be children's entertainment on the Monday and Tuesday before Christmas.
The Christmas lights, plus the grotto in Golden Square also add to the festive fun.
