VULCAN COULD DO BETTER

From the Guardian Series, first published Friday 6th Dec 1996.

Vulcan RUFC 15

Dukinfield 31

VULCAN started this game full of optimism after some good recent form but it was not to be as they failed to hold the strong visiting side.

Vulcan opened the scoring with a penalty from Morris but Dukinfield came back well and scored two converted tries with Vulcan's tackling leaving a lot to be desired.

With no more points in the first 40 minutes the half-time score read 14-3 to Dukinfield.

With a number of questionable decisions going against them Vulcan started to struggle and lost two pack members through injury. It was always going to be difficult for them to turn it around.

Dukinfield scored two more tries and kicked a penalty goal to lead 31-3 before Vulcan had their best spell of the game.

With only 13 men on the field they scored the last two tries of the game.

First Tither fed stand off Evans who scored between the posts, the try being converted by Morris.

Then, shortly afterwards, following good play by the backs and forwards, Evans sent winger Newton in unopposed.

Vulcan will look back on this game thinking they could have done a lot better, but at least the spirit and commitment was there until the end as their numbers dwindled.

Ian Hatton at scrum half, Mark Duffy and Paul McLymont were outstanding for Vulcan.
