RESIDENTS are to comb land deeds in a last-ditch bid to stop a second runway.

Mobberley Village Society has spent £700 obtaining the documents covering areas which will be concreted by Manchester Airport's £172m scheme.

Last night members began scouring hundreds of pages of information hoping to find covenants or technicalities which could affect Ringway's development. "We will be going through them with a fine tooth-comb," said society chairman Miles Milling.

Legal challenges are also being considered to last month's airport green light.

Manchester Airport Joint Action Group (MAJAG) solicitors are currently assessing whether the protest group has grounds for a judicial review of the decision. Members meet later this month to discuss their position. Macclesfield Borough Council and Mobberley Parish Council are also taking legal advice.

Protest group MAEN is to lobby community support for Ringway to set up an independently-assessed compensation scheme for residents affected by the second runway or its construction.

About 300 villagers heard of the plans at a meeting in Mobberley on Sunday, which was attended by MP Neil Hamilton. The gathering raised £360 for organisers MAEN.
