MIDDLEWICH could become a centre of historical interest if plans for a Roman project get the green light.
The project is the brainchild of county archaeologist Adrian Tindall, who is hoping to win a £100,000 Lottery Grant to begin work on a celebration of Middlewich's Imperial past.
Mr Tindall said: "We are hoping that this will be an attractive addition to the town, helping local people understand about the history of Middlewich as a Roman town and how it developed into today's town.
"It will also be a good attraction for people from outside the town.
"We are currently working on the grant application and hope to submit it by the end of the year."
The project is a partnership between several bodies including the town and county councils, which will both contribute £3,000, and the borough council which will contribute £4,000. Also involved are consultant archaeologists Gifford & Partners and the Middlewich Heritage Society.
The project will include a Roman tour led by trained guides, a schools education pack, a library display, an illustrated guidebook and a major public event with a display by the Ermine Street Guard - one of Britain's foremost re-enactment societies.
Town Clerk Jonathon Williams said: "This is a great opportunity for Middlewich. The town's Roman history has been understated for years. There continues to be historical findings about the town and this project is the chance to acknowledge and celebrate Roman Middlewich."
