CREWE town centre is switched on for the festive season.

It was lit up in a whirl of music, fun, fireworks and celebrities.

Crowds began gathering at 5pm on Thursday for the count-down to the fireworks and switch on that saw the Lyceum's 'Brief Encounter' stars Karen Drury and Richard Walsh team up with Dario G's Paul Spencer, Crewe Alex player Efie Sodje, club mascot Gresty the Lion and civic duo, Mayor, Cllr Mick Roberts and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Maurice Jones, to launch the colourful display.

Music from rhythm and blues group Zoot and young StarQuest winner, Maisie-Jo Stahl helped the event go with a swing.

Competitions, prizes and Santa Claus also added to the fun.

Nantwich gets its turn-on on this coming Saturday, November 30 when pantomime stars will have their fingers on the button and there will be more music and entertainment.

With the lights comes a series of late night and Sunday openings for Christmas shopping in both towns.

Saturday shoppers will also be able to enjoy some special festive music and entertainment.

l Nantwich Road shops at Crewe are also open for longer hours on limited days during the run-up to Christmas and have entertainment on Saturdays.
