Santa sets out on his tour

From the Guardian Series, first published Thursday 28th Nov 2002.

BIDDULPH children are being invited to come out and meet Santa during his tour of the town in the run-up to Christmas.

Santa is due to attend tomorrow's festive lights switch on before embarking on a 19-day tour of local estates.

The Yuletide tour is aimed at helping to raise money for local charities and good causes as well as meeting youngsters.

The switch on and tour are being organised by Biddulph Rotary Club, members of which will be out with Santa collecting for charity.

Biddulph town mayor Terry Gibson is due to switch on the Christmas lights tomorrow evening at 6pm in a ceremony in the High Street.

Santa's tour is due to start next Monday, and continues until December 23, with most of the tours starting at 6pm.

"Club members will be taking Santa and his sleigh to visit children in the area from next week," said club member Steve Biggins.

"The dual purpose of the tour is to entertain and delight the children, and to raise money for a variety of well-known national and local charities.

"Because of the increasing size of the town it will not be possible to visit every road, so the sleigh will stop at strategic points at the ends of some roads.

"Club members would like to thank local people for their generous donations to local charities via the Rotary collection."
