From the Guardian Series, first published Thursday 28th Nov 2002.
A THERAPY programme developed by a Sankey man is being used by people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome across the world.
Michael Mahoney, aged 45, who is based at the Guardian Medical Centre in Warrington, is a clinical hypnotherapist and the founder of the IBS Audio Program 100.
The programme was originally developed by Michael to help patients who were too sick to travel to his practice for treatment - and it has now gone global.
Thousands of sufferers of IBS from countries around the world have been benefiting from his CDs and cassette tapes, which offer a detailed introduction to hypnotherapy and IBS, as well as five hypnotherapy processes.
He said: "The programme is gentle, discreet and affordable. It is appealing to patients who have had a definite diagnosis of IBS - where other physical problems have been ruled out - because it can be done in the privacy of their home over a course of 100 days.
"More than 2,000 sufferers in 20 countries have been treated using the programme, often with the symptoms being gently mitigated or eliminated."
The IBS Audio Program 100 was launched in 1998 at the Your Health show in London.
Michael has also developed the IBS companion, a recording aimed at helping family and friends of IBS sufferers understand the condition.
His other work includes producing programmes for managing conditions such as stress, anxiety and insomnia.
