Hopsital parking will be less of a pain for visitors

PARKING congestion at Leighton Hospital is set to be eased with the introduction of 200 additional parking spaces, which will be available before Christmas.

The additional spaces have been created on the public parking areas by re-allocating staff to alternative places and is part of a continuing phased programme to ensure appropriate places are added to the site over the next two years.

It is welcome news for people who use the hospital on a regular basis, who have to continually struggle with the lack of parking spaces.

Colin Cadwallader, director of Estates and Facilities, apologised for the distress caused by the car parking situation and said the new spaces would help to ease matters.

"Some of the difficulties with parking recently have been caused following the new building works and the need to provide room for the heavy contractor vehicles on site.

"This will improve around Christmas time when the major schemes will be completed and will complement the additional 200 spaces created."

The improvements are part of the hospital's 'Travel Plan' which is considering alternative methods of travelling to Leighton for staff and patients, which include local public transport, car sharing and potential park and ride schemes.

"Whilst we fully appreciate the frustration of those wishing to park their cars, we do ask for the public's patience for just a few more weeks until the new spaces come into operation, and ask, if at all possible that patients use public transport over the next few weeks," added Mr Cadwallader.
