Vics seek revenge

From the Guardian Series, first published Thursday 28th Nov 2002.

BIDDULPH Vics are looking for revenge against Quorn tomorrow after going down to the free-scoring side in the cup.

Quorn are the league's top scorers, and beat the Vics 4-1 at home on Saturday in the second round of the League Cup.

Luke Varney, the league's leading scorer, was a thorn in the Vics' side, scoring three times.

Biddulph pulled one back towards the end, and take on Quorn at home in the league tomorrow.

Steve Callear was forced to head over his bar as Quorn pressed early on.

Sharpe for Quorn played a long ball down field, which Vics' keeper Taylor left and watched roll only inches wide of the post.

Quorn took the lead after a mistake by Taylor, who miskicked an easy back pass from Matt Beeby.

Varney raced in to steal the ball and rifle it home.

James Marrow shot wide for Biddulph, and Taylor did well to push a piledriver from Varney over the bar.

A minute later Varney made it 2-0, breaking through the middle and shooting past Taylor.

Baker for Biddulph headed wide, and Weston and Callan had shots blocked in front of goal.

Varney earned his hat-trick six minutes into the second half when he turned in a Noble cross.

Wilson-Cunningham scored his first goal for the Vics with 15 minutes left, picking up the ball 35 yards out and beating the keeper with a looping shot.

Nurse made it 4-1 after heading home another Noble cross.
