Rugby men break their duck

CONGLETON' 1st XV scored their first league victory of the season on Saturday with success at St Marys Old Boys.

Congleton were second from bottom before the game, which ended with a 14-9 victory over their bottom of the table opponents.

St Mary's took the lead on 10 minutes by slotting home an easy penalty.

Congleton fought back to lead 7-3 when flanker John Woodman crashed through for a try under the posts converted by Mark Winship.

Jamie Henshall halted a certain try for St Mary's, who closed the gap to one point with a penalty.

Congleton extended their lead with a quarter of the game left courtesy of a beautifully-worked try.

Geoff Mackey passed to winger Steve Vandersteen, who side stepped his man before touching down, Winship converting.

St Mary's gave themselves hope with a penalty two minutes later to cut the deficit to five.

Congleton play Orrell Anvils at home in the league tomorrow.
