Charity night triumph

FUN-LOVING wrestling star Andy 'Rage' Baker staged a spectacular charity match - to help young paralysed sportsman Andrew Forbes.

He pledged to raise funds after meeting courageous Andrew, 18, who faces life in a wheelchair after a freak motorbike accident.

Andrew and his family joined hundreds of spectators to watch the thrilling event at the Grangeway Community Centre.

His mum, Pauline, said: "Andrew had a brilliant time. It was a great night. They were dancing in the aisles.

"The crowd was shouting. As soon as Rage came on, the noise was deafening. The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic.

"We really enjoyed it."

Fifteen wrestlers presented Andrew with a signed T-shirt and fun glasses.

"I can't thank Rage enough," said Pauline, of Lugsdale Road, Widnes. "He has not only raised money for Andrew but also lifted his spirits as well. He said: 'I've got a friend for life'."

Rage, 22, of Beechwood, who raised £600, said: "The reception I got when I won was amazing. We did it for Andrew. I had a bit of a tear in my eye."

Apec Taxis made it possible for Andrew to travel to Runcorn for the seven-bout grappling extravaganza.

Pauline said: "Apec Taxis were absolutely brilliant. They phoned me after reading our appeal in the World. Nothing was too much trouble. We couldn't have done it without them. When we offered to pay, they wouldn't take a penny."

Paul Furfie, treasurer of Apec Taxis, said: "This young lad has a problem and we've got the vehicles.

"Everyone needs a little help sometime. We can't leave him stranded."

Runcorn-based Apec is a co-operative run by 74 members. The company, with 132 drivers, was set up following the merger of Apollo and Echo.
