Hungary for more

From the Guardian Series, first published Thursday 9th Jan 2003.

A SANKEY Bridges man who went east for his career has turned his attentions to the stock exchange after helping to launch Tesco in Hungary.

But it has not been all business and no pleasure for Howard Bellian, aged 46, who has found love on the Danube since he moved to Budapest four years ago.

The former resident of Pickmere Street originally moved to the Hungarian capital in order to help open Tesco stores in eastern Europe and is now trying his hand at trading on the stock market following a 12-month career break.

When bosses at the Northwich branch of the supermarket giant put the call out for volunteers to move out to Hungary, Howard was only too happy to put his name forward to help open 15 stores.

And he found love at the same time, marrying Eniko Barcza, a consumer worker, back in June.

Even though the marriage clashed with England's vital World Cup encounter with Denmark, the couple made sure all the visiting guests from Warrington could watch the game during the reception on a boat on the Danube.

Eniko joked: "If I hadn't done this, we probably wouldn't have had any male guests."

And with England winning the game it was a cause for a double celebration.

Proud father Ronald, also from Pickmere Street, said the wedding was a three-day-long party following the register office ceremony.
