THE bags of fish at Newton Anglers' Association's National Team Open were impressive for this time of year.
None more so than Mark McClymont's haul.
Fishing on peg 66, he took roach, perch and a tench weighing a total of 7lbs 15ozs 0drms in the 32-strong event at the Sankey St. Helens Canal's upper pound section. Alternating punch bread and caster on the pole was the successful method.
Tony Derbyshire secured second spot on peg two using the same technique. He caught roach, perch and skimmers weighing 7-4-0.
Tony Skoyles finished third on peg 65. Using long pole, he caught roach, perch and skimmers weighing 6-10-0.
Fourth place went to John Inman on peg 4. He took a mixed bag of skimmers, roach and perch weighing 6-6-0 on pole and casters.
The match was fished on pegs one to 10 and 45 to 66 as the shallow 30s have not been producing good results.
The next national team open will be on Sunday. There are 80 pegs available. Anyone interested should contact Mark on 226167.
Meanwhile, the latest Over 60s and Disabled Sweepstake was fished by 22 anglers on pegs 66 to 88.
The winner was match organiser and committee member Roy Whitfield. He had a mixed bag of roach, perch and gudgeon weighing 4-11-9 on peg 67.
Second place went to Walter Powell on peg 68. He caught roach and perch totalling 1-12-0.
Jeff Prescot came third on peg 66. He took perch, roach and gudgeon weighing 1-7-8 while fourth-placed Keith Hay's haul of fish weighed in at 0-15-4.
On the pleasure angling scene, the canal's lower pound has been producing good isolated catches of roach and bream in the wides on small ledger tactics.
The upper pound has also been fishing better than the norm for this time of year. Roach and perch to 1lb have been reported between pegs 40 and 60.
The odd tench, bream and carp have also been caught.
The members only Penkford stretch has continued to produce quality roach. Fish weighing more than 20lbs have been reported on pole at eight metres on the drop. Maggot and casters have been the best baits.
The popular Yew Tree Reservoir has produced some red-hot silver fish catches. It has also produced a haul of almost 60 roach up to 1½lbs.
Carp have not been disappointing either with plenty of double figure mirrors taken from the surface. Bream and tench are there to be caught as well.
Members should note that the association's annual meeting will take place at the Griffin Hotel on January 30 at 8pm and not on January 23 as previously planned. All resolutions, notice of motions and nominations must be handed in to the association's secretary at least 14 days prior to the meeting.
