CREWE'S 'Safe as Houses' project is getting its message across to youngsters and their parents.

A special 'Safety Awareness Day' held at its base in Timbrell Avenue proved a huge success, on Saturday.

Designed to reduce accidents in the home, the initiative is an educational interactive experience involving two council homes with different rooms highlighting a number of potential hazards.

Crewe Fire Service were present to give dramatic displays on how to deal with chip pan fires and staff from The Safer Communities Partnership were also on hand to offer advice on home safety.

Partners in the project, which is being managed by Anchor Staying Put, include the Borough Council, Cheshire Fire Brigade, Cheshire Police Constabulary, South Cheshire Health Authority, the Specialist Health Promotion service, Age Concern and Cheshire County Council.

Project mgr Linda Smith said the day had been a winner with youngsters.

"We are really pleased that the ideas are getting across," she said.

"A number of children from the local area were invited and they were really enthusiastic, a lot of them even came back with their parents in the afternoon.

Vice chair of local Manor Farm Residents' Association Albert Sharp agreed stating: "It was interesting and informative, I think more people should make themselves aware of hazards in the home.
