Council Tax bills to soar 11 per cent

From the Guardian Series, first published Thursday 27th Feb 2003.

CONGLETON families face average Council Tax increases of £114 a year from next month, a rise of 11 per cent.

Band D bills for homes in the town worth between £68,000 and £88,000 will be £1,154, compared with £1,040 for last year.

Similar value houses in Alsager will pay £1,132, in comparison with an annual bill of £1,029 for 2002.

Congleton residents will pay £901 to Cheshire County Council, an increase of 10 per cent on last year.

The Congleton Borough Council element of the bill rises by £8 to £135, an increase of 4.95 per cent.

The remainder of the Band D bill represents spending plans by Cheshire Police Authority and town and parish councils.

"The borough council is to pump more than £150,000 into improved services and improved cleanliness thanks to a 4.95 per cent increase in its portion of the bill," said council press officer Sue Dickens.

"This will be in addition to improving the borough's infrastructure to the tune of £1.3 million through its capital programme."

The extra £150,000 will be spent on improving local streets, including street cleaning, litter removal, refuse collection and grass cutting.

Resources director Donald Lowe said the council's budget for 2003 has placed it in a secure financial position.

"This will enable it to continue to develop the quality services it provides well into the future," he said.
