Powner in superb form as Alsager cruise to victory

From the Guardian Series, first published Thursday 27th Feb 2003.

ALSAGER Town made it six wins in seven games on Saturday when they ran out deserved 3-0 winners at Fleetwood Town.

Alsager keeper Rob Powner was in excellent form, helping his side to their fifth clean sheet in a row.

Alsager soaked up early pressure before hitting back, creating three chances in as many minutes through Redgate, Rowe and Hurley.

They took the lead on 24 minutes when Rowe took a long throw, and Redgate headed home from close range.

Fleetwood replied with two efforts from top scorer Catlow, only to be denied by Powner.

Alsager continued to pound the Fleetwood goal in the second half, but had to wait until the hour before increasing their lead.

Hurley's shot from 20 yards was parried by keeper Banks, and the ball fell to Parry, who fired an unstoppable shot into the net from 10 yards.

Alsager made it 3-0 seven minutes from the end when Gregory's shot was turned in by Redgate for his second of the match.

"The Alsager defence was in tremendous form, with captain Wayne Brotherton urging his defenders on," said press officer Sam Brotherton.

"Drummond and Ireland worked tirelessly in midfield, and wing backs Chapman and Gregory made great runs down the flanks."

Alsager take on Fleetwood at home tomorrow.
