Out of luck

From the Guardian Series, first published Wednesday 19th Mar 2003.

Altrincham League Division One

Broadheath Central 2 Knutsford FC A 0

LEAGUE leaders Broadheath Central claimed the points but for much of this game Knutsford looked the better team.

Unfortunately for the visitors they could not produce the end result in front of goal and when Broadheath scored in the 25th minute the game took on a different complexion.

Knutsford appealed for a foul after a battle between home team striker Moss and Richard Cocksedge, but their pleas were waved away and Broadheath were 1-0 up.

The goal renewed the home side's confidence and for 15 minutes Knutsford had to withstand mounting pressure.

Bench

After the break the visitors were once again on top and for 20 minutes threw everything at their hosts but could not find a breakthrough.

New face Danny Leahey came off the bench and saw a brilliant free kick well saved by Roberts.

At the other end Knutsford suffered a cruel blow when an in-swinging corner held up slightly in the wind and the unlucky Steve Downs could only help the ball into his own net under extreme pressure.

The goal deflated any hope of a Knutsford revival but there were notable performances from Matt Stimpson and the hard working Pip Cartner.

On Saturday the A team play their last home game of the season when they entertain Trafford FC.

Kick off at Manchester Road is 2pm.

TEAM: S Downs, M Stimpson, A Long, A Potts, R Cocksedge, D Beattie, N Deeley, P Cartner, S Forrest, J Evans, M Cartner. Substitutes D Leahey, P Berry
