Shoplifters have a field day in store

SHOPLIFTERS helped themselves to food, drink and toiletries from the Co-op Late Shop on four occasions on Sunday.

One man selected eight cans of lager from a shelf, then walked towards the door.

"He was challenged by the supervisor who asked him if he wanted to pay for the alcohol, but he walked past him, not saying anything," said a police spokesman. Thieves also stole two packets of crisps and a sandwich, small bottles of shampoo and meat between 4pm and 11pm.

A shopper, who was in the Princess Street store on Sunday, told the Guardian: "The kids running the place had had a bad day with thefts. "They looked absolutely fed up."

It is not the first time that shoplifters have struck at the town centre supermarket.

In November the Knutsford Guardian told how a man was caught on CCTV trying to steal meat.

Ian Roberts, of no fixed abode, was later jailed for three months by Macclesfield magistrates after he admitted stealing meat and attempting to steal other food from the shop.

Shoppers had watched in amazement as Roberts loaded supermarket food into a cardboard box and then tried to walk out of the shop without paying.
