Pubs call time on the unsociables

From the Guardian Series, first published Wednesday 19th Mar 2003.

ANTI-SOCIAL behaviour in Middlewich is being tackled by a new scheme that could see people banned from socialising in the town.

The Pubwatch scheme was officially launched at the Golden Lion Pub in Middlewich on Monday and involves the Middlewich Community Action Team (CAT) and 23 licensees in the area.

They will meet each month to discuss anti-social behaviour and disorder and to warn each other about those people responsible for it.

As part of the scheme, the CAT can issue either warnings or bans to people on behalf of the licensees.

This ban effectively bars the individual from all the premises involved in the scheme.

Billie Law from the King's Lock Inn, Booth Lane, is pleased the scheme is being introduced to the town.

She said: "It is a very important scheme for Middlewich and it is really to make a safe and nice environment for everyone to drink in and not have to worry about potential trouble.

"We have zero tolerance on drugs and violence and we want to make a better environment for everyone to enjoy."

PC Peter Jones, of the Middlewich CAT, said: "What we don't want in Middlewich is any anti-social behaviour and we want to stop any trouble in the town centre.

"Ultimately our aim is to attract families back and this project is a brick in the wall we can use."

He said the scheme has proved successful in other Cheshire towns and everybody involved is hoping the scheme will have positive results in Middlewich.
