Off to a winning start

From the Guardian Series, first published Thursday 19th Aug 2004.

CREWE FC kicked off their season in style with a solid 2-0 victory over Crosfields at the Cumberland Stadium.

Second-half goals from Gareth Brooks and substitute Graham Taylor gave Ian O'Reilly's boys the perfect start to their MCL Division One campaign.

Keeper Steve Harding was called upon twice as the visitors had the better of the first-half, ending goalless after Dave Hanson and Steve Parker had also missed decent chances.

O'Reilly made a double substitution at the break, replacing Alan Brown (head injury) and Martin Chesters with Danny Massey and Taylor, and it paid dividends.

Massey supplied the precision cross for Brooks to tap home on 60 minutes while Taylor delighted a decent crowd at the Cumberland, netting a blockbuster from the edge of the area.

The boss was buzzing with a winning start:

"I can't remember the last time we won our first game, this could be a first," he said.

"We were a bit nervous early on and they definitely edged the first half.

"But they were a young side and I think our experience came through in the end.

"It was a good performance especially as we had a few out.

"That's four in four for Brooky since he come back and Graham Taylor's goal was as sweet as a nut.

"It was worthy of winning two games not just one.

"We had a decent crowd here too and this is a good start for us, we're over the moon."

Crewe entertain Golborne Sports at the Cumberland Stadium, this Saturday, KO 3pm, followed by their big match against a Crewe Alexandra XI side on Wednesday, August 25, KO 6.30pm.

l Crewe FC lost 5-2 at new league leaders Styal on Tuesday night.
