VE Day celebrations are set up by firefighters

From the Guardian Series, first published Thursday 10th Mar 2005.

CREWE fire brigade is helping to mark the 60th anniversary of VE Day with a celebration on the town's Market Square.

The brigade has joined forces with the borough council to commemorate the landmark with a host of attractions that will include live music, service memorabilia, photographic displays and vintage fire engines.

Firefighter Gareth Roberts said: "During the weeks leading up to the event we are aiming to have a display of old photographs showing VE Day in the Crewe area or any photos appropriate to the local impact of the war."

And to start the build-up to the May 7 spectacle, Crewe war veteran Jim Davies, pictured centre, was invited to show firefighters (LtoR) Gareth Roberts, Kevin Birtles, Paul Gresty, and Janssen Bostock photographs similar to what they are appealing for.

l Anyone who can help provide photographs, which will be scanned and returned, should contact Elaine Dodd at the borough council on 537559.
