In the market for a new beginning

From the Guardian Series, first published Thursday 10th Mar 2005.

NANTWICH residents will be key players in drawing up exciting blueprints for the town's future regeneration.

The New Economics Foundation has this week begun a Local Distinctiveness Study into what people think are Nantwich's best features and most pressing needs.

The study is the first part of the nine-month first phase of the Market Towns Initiative to regenerate the town.

Residents will be asked their views on Nantwich's future in questionnaires, surveys and focus groups over the next nine months and the results of the investigation will be used by a project officer to draw up regeneration plans.

Nantwich Town Council drew up a list of possible improvements when the initiative was discussed last year, including free car parking, more pedestrian crossings, a free shuttle bus service and adapting Mill Island as a showground.

Nantwich Town Council chairman Penny Butterill said: "This will hopefully equip Nantwich with a distinct theme that can be used to support economic, social and environmental projects.

"Public consultation is a major part of the work which will identify the community's needs and ambitions for the future.

"The Local Distinctiveness Study will feed into the Market Towns Health Check process to provide a comprehensive look at Nantwich."

Residents are invited to take part in the study by answering the following questions:

1. What do you like most about living in Nantwich?

2. If you were describing Nantwich to a potential visitor, what one thing would you highlight as being unique or distinct?

3. What should be done to preserve Nantwich's unique features or character?

4. If you had three wishes for Nantwich, what would they be?

People can send their responses to Economic Development and Estates Department, Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council, Municipal Buildings, Earle Street, Crewe, CW1 2BJ, or email carol.maddock@crewe-nantwich.gov.uk.
