Biker boys saddle up for charity trek

From the archive, first published Thursday 3rd Jan 2008.

A HALE teenager cycled around 1,000 miles to raise money for charity with his younger brother on hand to film his adventure.

Sam Berens, 17, biked the 977 miles from Lands End to John O'Groats in December with Daniel, 14, and dad Jonathan.

The brothers. who both go to North Cestrian Grammar School and live on Alstead Avenue, completed the challenge for Cancer Research UK.

While Sam cycled his way up the country Daniel filmed, produced and recorded a DVD of the impressive feat including a background soundtrack. He hopes to market the CD and give the proceeds for charity along with the £1,000 raised by Sam.

Sam said: "The cycle was challenging as there were some very hard parts and we were travelling up to 100 miles a day but on the whole it was enjoyable and I got a lot out of it and raised lots of money at the same time."

Daniel explained how he and his dad followed the route by car and stopped and filmed places of interest. He said: "I enjoyed myself a lot as we saw lots of really interesting places so it was a really good experience. I'm still putting the finishing touches to the DVD so it can go on sale."

Martin Sharpe, head of modern languages, said: "What the two boys achieved is fantastic. They have been so modest even though academically they are both very bright."
